Search Engine Optimisation

Web site ranking - How to improve your site's ranking in Google

Search engines are an important traffic provider. In order to improve your web site's ranking you need to look at various aspects of how you prepare your information.

Define your target key phrases

First you need to set yourself a goal: 10 key phrases that you want to target. In our case (www.pixelsound.com), we might define a list such as:

  1. "perth web site design"
  2. "web design perth"
  3. "web development perth"
  4. "search engine optimisation perth"
  5. "optimisation of web site pages"
  6. "web site ranking"
  7. "submit web site"
  8. "web site submission"
  9. "web site marketing"
  10. "web site promotion"

Remember that "perth web site design" and "web design perth" would be two different things.

Tools like the following websites help you to pick your key phrases.

These websites record what people searched for in the past. Obviously there is no use in targeting "Leederville web design company with exclusive design" if nobody uses this exact phrase.

Filter out best phrases

Important is to look at the ratio between:

number of competitor sites with the same key phrase
./.
number of searches conducted

Ideally you want to use a keyphrase that thousands of people desperately search for, but no other website uses it.

In Google: type your key phrase in inverted commas (eg "web design perth" ). On the results page, at the top right, it will tell you how many websites exactly use this phrase.

Results 1 - 10 of about 94,700 for "web design perth". (0.50 seconds)

Optimisation of web site pages

Place your target key phrases in important places:

  • Page Name (eg "web-design-perth.html")
  • Page Title (appears in the window bar)
  • H1, H2, H3 Header tags
  • Links and navigation
  • Text set in bold
  • Main Text
  • Meta description and keywords

Note that Meta description and keywords are not so important anymore, since Google rates the real content higher than Meta data.

Does it help to exchange links with other websites?

Yes and no. Remember it doesn't help you at all if you link to another site. Rather you need other websites that link to you.

You can do that by taking part in schemes such as "I Need Hits" (not recommended) and/or you try to build a network by yourself, with business partners or associates.

Make sure that partner sites are within your area of business. Eg car parts, garages, second hand car dealers etc. If a car dealer was to exchange links with a butcher, a classical choir and a real estate agent his website would more likely fall back in the Google ranking.

Another factor is the importance of these other web sites. In the case of our car dealer for example it would be worth a lot to get Toyota to link to his website as Toyota's site is rated to be very important.

Submit web site

At Pixelsound we submit our client's web sites to Google, Yahoo and MSN automatically once a site is finished.

Pay per Click - Payed adverts in Google

If you want to make sure that you are getting listed and you don't mind to pay for it, you might consider a "Pay per Click" advertising.

You only pay once a visitor clicks on the link that takes him to your site and you can set a maximum value that you want to spend per day or per month (eg $5 per day). Once your account reaches this value your ad will not appear anymore.

WARNING

Google wants quality search results that are relevant for its users. Therefore Google gives penalty points to websites that use tricks in order to improve their ranking without really improving their information.

You can get penalties for tricks like repeating of key phrases or taking part in wild linking schemes or write bulks of key phrases and hide them later using style sheets etc.
